Abstract

A general comparative study of the marine ichthyophona of the United Arab Emirates (Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman) and Syria (eastern Mediterranean sea) is presented.
A historical survey of the ichthyophonistic literature on both tow areas reveals: a constant rate of increase in the number of new record species in the eastern Mediterranean resulting from increased collection effort and continuous influx of species of Red sea and Indo- pacific origin.
From an annotated list of 37 family common between the eastern Mediterranean sea (Syrian coast) and the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman ( Emirates coast),. only 12 species representing 8 family is found common in both areas.
A cheek list of United Arab Emirates marine ichthyophona including 189 species within 65 family is presented. A cheek list of Syrian marine ichthyophona including 171 species within 65 family is presented.
The role of environmental and geological factors is discussed.

Key words: Biodiversity, Fish, Gulf, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, UAE, Syria.
