Abstract

Hyperaspis vinciguerrae Capra is one of the most important predators preying on mealy bugs in Egypt. The present work deals with the effect of the two mealy bugs, planococcus ficus (Signoret) and Ferrisia virgata (Cockerell) on certain bio-parameters of the coccinellid Hyperaspis vinciguerrae Capra; at the constant hygrothermal conditions of 30 Co and 55-60 %R H. The average number of deposited eggs per female was significantly higher when rearing on P. ficus than on F. virgata ; being in respective 399.3 and 188.0 eggs / female. The number of alive eggs were in respective 279.8 and 160.6 eggs. The respective produced progeny was higher (177.7 individuals) in case of P. ficus than F. virgata (103.5 individuals ).The sex ratios (% female) were in respective 56.6% and 51.1%. The average total developmental period of H. vinciguerrae was significantly shorter ( 31.3 days) on P. ficus than on F. virgata (40.7 days). However, the respective longevity of females were 40.8 and 55.6 days ; being significantly longer in association with F. virgata On the contrary, the males' longevity in the two cases of feeding were more or less equal; being in respective 61.3 and 64.5 days.

The values of life table parameters indicated that the prey P. ficus was more favorite than F. virgata; showing the higher net reproductive rate value (102.1 individuals ), shorter mean generation time (33.8 days) and shorter population doubling time (5.1 days).
