Abstract

The IPM Programme in the Near East Project - GTFS/REM/070/ITA funded by the Italian Government through Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) established the first ever IPM/FFS in Syria in 2004. The Farmer Field School (FFS) in the costal area of Syria introduced for farmers the tactics to obtained tomato production clean and free from harmful pesticides.
A detailed work plan for Lattakia and Tartous FFSs was prepared following the crop from soil preparation to marketing.
IPM tactics used were a combination of agronomic, mechanical and biological methods instead of using chemical pesticides for pest control and crop management in line with the procedures of good agriculture practices (GAP). If chemical pesticides had to be used, it was considered to be the last resource and accepted by the IPM Programme in order to protect human health, bio- diversity and the environment including sources of water. The following results have been successfully obtained:
Use of Soil solarization instead of Methyl Bromide
Proper sanitation of the greenhouse.
Use of bio-agent Bracon and Trichogramma instead of chemical pesticides to control Heliothis armigera on tomato.
Use of Bumble-bees instead of hormones for tomato pollination. Soil analysis and proper recommendation for fertilization tactics.
