Sustainable Development and cotton textile in Syria

Abstract


Cotton textile provides , after oil , the second largest source of foreign currency, it is dominant branch of industry from the view point of production value and employment in Syria, the textile sector contributes about 5.4 % of the total export revenue generated by the textile industry. Syria's share in the world total cotton production in about 7% in comparison, the United States produce about 18% of the world's cotton.
Cotton in Syria should be regarded from perspective of sustainable development, as it results in the following environmental , social , and economical impacts : environmental :overuse of water and soil degradation due to pesticides . social :over 300000 persons are involved in cotton cultivation as seasonal workers and over 25000 persons are working in the cotton textile .
economical :export of cotton is a strategic crops for Syria generating the second largest foreign income after oil .
