Abstract

We present in this study the variation of some phaepigment of chlorophyll a, b, c, and primary productivity of phytoplankton and some hydrological factors in Syrian coast, during the period Mar. - Dec. 2002.

Samples were collected from two locations distancing ~ 100 and 500 m from the shore of two stations. The first station (Lattakia port) is exposed to pollution from ships and domestic waste of Lttakia city. The second is located further north of Lattakia (Wadi Kandil) and is regarded as very clean station .

The result showed some differences between polluted and clean station. The mean of phaepigment concentration were 3.3±1.8 and 0.7±0.3 mg/L for chlorophyll a in the first station & second station respectively; 6.4±4.2 and 1.29±0.69 µg/L for chlorophyll b in the first station & second station respectively, and 6.4±0.0 and 20.6±20.15 µg/L for Chlorophyll c in the first station & second station respectively.

The highest value for primary productivity recorded in the polluted station (Lattakia port) reached 432.78 mg Carbon /m2/day (mean of the two 195.7±103.8) and 133.25 mg Carbon/m2/day in Wadi Kandil station; most value ranged between 2.7-133mgC/m2/day.
