Abstract
In order to understand three-dimensional structure of the hydrography and currents in the area between Cyprus, Syria and the Turkey, series of measurements using ADCP and CTD profiling, current-meter and sea-level recordings are analysed. The steady surface current follows the coast of Israel, Lebanon and Syria and turns west to follow along the southern Turkish coast.
A branch of this main current enters the Iskenderun Bay in which two main types of circulation are observed. In the summer, waters coming from Syrian coast enter the Bay near Karatas and two gyres, a clockwise on in the inner part and the anti-clockwise one in the outer part, are formed. This surface circulation pattern is also observed visually from large collection of plastic materials at the centers of the gyres. The circulation in the Mersin Bay show time-dependent currents, with separated eddies formed along the coast.
