Abstract

Cadmium, lead, copper and zinc concentrations have been determined in the edible parts of the Syrian Sea and river fish in order to determine the daily intake of these trace metals to the Syrian people. Lead, Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations of sea fish mussels were found to be relatively low and ranged from 0.02 - 0.26, 0.004 - 0.127, 0.1 - 2.48 and 3.56 - 19.3 ppm of wet wt respectively. In addition, concentrations of these trace metals in river fish mussels were also found to be low and the highest values for lead (1.6 ppm wet wt) was in those samples collected from the Euphrates river. Moreover, the studied trace metals were also determined in bones and were found to correlate with their concentrations in fish mussels. However, the obtained results are still lower than those values reported in other countries in the world. Furthermore, the daily intake of these trace metals by Syrians were found to be 0.398, 0.035, 1.46 and 22.3 g for Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn respectively, these values are much lower than the higher permissible concentrations according to the Syrian Standards.
