Abstract

The BLAC (Bassin du Levant et Arc de Chypre) survey (oct-nov. 2003 on the R.V. Le Suroit) was designed to investigate the area between Cyprus and the Levantine margin with Simrad EM300 swath bathymetry and imagery coverage, seismic reflexion with supplement chirp profiling.

It was firstly aimed to study the tectonic regimes along the eastern bend of the Cyprus Arc through a morphostructural and tectonic-sedimentary approach, to assess the role of salt tectonics and geodynamic tectonics on the subsurface deformation. Another goal was to evaluate the influence of the seafloor morphology on the sedimentary dynamics, such as the distribution of sediment transport paths. A special attention was also paid on the sediment instabilities along the Syrian continental slope and Lattakia ridge.

Data have imaged the surface and subsurface structure, showing a seafloor topography dominated by a wide curved complex range structured in a series of ridges and basins bounded by a sharp curved ridge which represents the deformation front between the African and Eurasian plates. The various morphobathymetric patterns identified on the seafloor of the rise result from the combined action of folding, salt diapirism and mud volcano activity on the Plio-Quaternary cover. Near the continental margin of Syria, the Lattakia ridge is a connecting segment between the Cyprus Arc and the onshore structures of the East-Anatolian system. It is a wide horst structure where extensional features are responsible for sediment instability.
