The Late Quaternary Sedimentation in the northern shelf of Antalya Bay

Abstract
The late Quaternary sedimentation on the continental shelf of the northern Antalya Bay (SW Turkey) has been investigated by using a single channel high resolution shallow seismic profiling system. On the seismic data, the two truncation surfaces (R1, R2) representing the late Quaternary sea level lowstands, and the two transgressive seismic units (Unit 1, Unit 2) have been identified. The Unit 1 interpreted as a Holocene transgsressive deposits occurs in the whole area with varying thickness values. Its thickness has been primarily influenced by onshore geology and basin structure. The truncation surface R1 delineates the lower boundary of Unit 1. Unit 2 overlying R2, is the transgressive unit and interpreted as deposited during the second to the last Quaternary sea level lowstand. Additionally, the paleo-deltaic deposits observed at about 6-7 km seaward from the mouth of the Aksu River were interpreted as late Quaternary sea level lowstand wedges. Off the northern coast, reefs buried under the Holocene deposits represent an relict shelf edge formed during the sea level rising periods since the last glacial maximum.
