The 9th International Conference of the Orthopterists’ Society
The Orthopterists' Society, an organization devoted to the study of orthopteroid insects, will hold the next world meeting in Canmore, Alberta, Canada, on August 14 19, 2005. World meetings are held approximately every four years. The most recent previous International Conference of the Orthopterists' Society was held in August, 2001, in Montpellier, France.
This world meeting concerns all aspects of study of grasshoppers, locusts, crickets and their allies. Topics will include subjects of international, national or regional interest. Registration and attendance is open to members and non members of the Orthopterists' Society.
Highlights: The 2005 conference will include a plenary lecture by Professor Stephen J. Simpson (Department of Zoology and Oxford University Museum of Natural History, UK), entitled
Phase change in locusts: from neurones to populations.
Four Plenary Symposia will follow, on the subjects listed below. We will also have submitted scientific papers on all aspects of orthopterology, posters, concurrent symposia, special sessions, a banquet, and business meetings. Field trips are planned for those wishing to observe local Orthoptera or simply experience the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Watch for notices on the website, www.orthoptera2005.org, and the Orthopterists' Society webpage, www.orthoptera.org .
Symposia, 2005:
- Is Research a Good Driver for Locust and Grasshopper Control? Symposium chairs: A. Latchininsky and M. Lecoq
- Advancements and Controversies in Phase Polyphenism Research Symposium chairs: G. Sword and S. Simpson
- Sexual selection and Reproductive Behaviour of Orthoptera Symposium Chairs: D. Gwynne and W. Cade
- Hybrid Zones: Evolutionary Dead end or Cradle of Innovation? Symposium Chair: D. Howard
The meeting will also include presentation of submitted scientific papers, posters, concurrent symposia, and special sessions. Requests for special meetings and mini symposia are welcome.
The meeting will be organized to allow ample time and a friendly atmosphere promoting introductions and discussions at the subgroup meetings, banquet, award ceremonies, reception, social events, field trips and local excursions.
Field trips: Two separate excursions are planned: 1) alpine and montane sites near Canmore, and 2) grassland biomes on Alberta grassland. Guidebooks to local Orthoptera will be available.
Registration fees: Participants 180 US$; Students 50 US$; Accompanying persons 50 US$
The assistance of meeting supporters, particularly the University of Lethbridge, is greatly appreciated.
A call for papers will be issued shortly. Attendance is open to all. If you would like to request a letter of invitation, please contact the meeting Chair or an Executive member after Dec 1, 2004. Funding in support of attendees or presenters is not presently available, but announcements will follow. We are working to reduce meeting costs for all of our members, in particular for students and visitors from nations that are disadvantaged by economic disparity.
Location: Canmore is in the heart of the beautiful Canadian Rocky Mountains, minutes from Banff National Park, but still only a pleasant drive from the international airport in Calgary, Alberta.
The meeting will be held at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Centre, Canmore, Alberta.
Registration and booking information will be posted shortly, with the first official call for submitted papers and posters. Hotel rates are from a maximum of US $120 per night and down, to as low as US $30 for students (per student per night, for two persons sharing a room). Alternative accommodation contacts will be posed. We are working on ensuring reasonable rates for a range of budgets.
