Abstract

The egg parasitoid Trichogramma evanescens (West.) has been applied in Egypt since 1988 as a biocontrol agent against the sugar - cane borer, Chilo Agamemnon Bles. infesting sugarcane. 13 units for mass-production of Trichogramma has been established in middle and upper Egypt. Percentage of infestation was reduced by 50 - 79% in the treated areas. The treated area reached 90.000 ha. in 2003. Since 1998, T. evanescens has been utilized against the lepidopteran pests of dates in Siwa Oasis. The treated area increased gradually to reach 1400 ha in 2003. Successful control was achieved in this area as the rates of infestation dropped to 0.0 - 12 % with, an average of 1.25 % . Starting from 2003 the parasitoid is released against the peach bud - borer Anarsia lineatella , the olive moth, Prays oleae and the grapevine moth, Lobesia botrana and the results are promising. T. evanescens is released at a rate of 50,000 / ha only once in sugar-cane fields as the parasitoid occurs naturally in such fields but with a low rate of parasitism early in the season (May - July) and with a high rate (up to 90%) during October - November. However, the parasitoid is released, at the same rate, 3 times against the other mentioned pests.
