Successful Achievements For Applied Biological Control Of Water Hyacinth, Eichhornia crassippes (Mart.) Solms (Pontederiaceae) In Egypt

Abstract
Biological control of water hyacinth; Eichhornia crassippes (Mart.) Solms, Pontederiaceae) using the two weevils; Neochetina eichhorniae Warner and N. bruchi Hustache (Curculionidae, Coleoptera) was applied since the year 2000 in Mariout and Edko lakes North of Egypt in cooperation with the French government through the French Food Aid Counterpart Fund (FFACF). After releasing of 18573 adults of both weevils species through several releases, over three successive years, successful reduction in the rate of water hyacinth infestation was recorded in both lakes. Results were confirmed by means of Satellite images obtained from the French Satellite SPOT which showed 29.1 and 34.4% reduction in Mariout and Edko lakes, respectively in 2001. Images taken by the same satellite in 2003 confirmed the reduction of water hyacinth infestation by 58.5 % than that recorded in the year 2001 .in Edko Lake, to reach a total percentage of reduction of more than 80% than that reported before releasing the weevils.
