Abstract

True spiders have an important role in the biological control against the pests of the corn crops. Therefore, propagation of this community is needed. The purpose of the present study is to find a simple method for increasing the numbers of the members of this community in the Egyptian Delta corn fields focusing on the type of fertilizer. Both chemical and organic fertilizers were applied on an unsprayed corn field at Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate, Egypt at the experimental farm of Sakha Agricultural Research Station. The results revealed that spatial and temporal distributions in the field fertilized by farmyard manure were higher (18 genera belong to 11 families) compared with those in mineral fertilized field (10 genera belong to 7 families). Web-building spiders were more abundant than the hunting spiders in case of the farmyard manure and the dominant families were Linyphiidae, Philodromidae, Lycosidae, Araneidae, Theridiidae and Tetragnathidae. This study reflects the probable indirect effect of the fertilizer's type in terms of biological control and the role of the spiders against pests of the corn crops.
