Abstract

Spinosad is a metabolite of the actinomycete, Saccaropolyspora spinosa Mertz & Yao. It belongs to a new class of chemistry "Naturalyte" with a new mode of action. It is a wide spectrum bio-insecticide. It has combined the advantage of conventional insecticides as quick speed of kill and the advantages of bio-insecticides as conservation of natural enemies. It is not easily affected by the existing resistance mechanism to conventional insecticides. Field cotton leaf worm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) that showed high level of resistance to conventional insecticides was more susceptible to this product. It is registered for organic farming in the USA, Switzerland and Tunis. Currently, exporters of vegetables, fruit filed crops, flowers, and herbs are using this product without problem. Application with this product in conjunction with the release of natural enemies e.g. Trichogramma spp. is an excellent example of a functional cotton IPM programs. So, It is leading the IPM program on cotton in Australia and the USA. Based on FQPA and EPA reports, spinosad awarded the reduced risk product in 1997 and the "green chemical" in 1999
