Abstract

Lethal and sublethal effects of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki on the cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae were determined by a diet incorporation bioassay. Newly molted third instar larvae were exposed through ingestion to different concentrations of CrlAc toxin. Larval mortality of S. littoralis increased with the concentration resulting LC50 value of 40 g/ml. Lethal time decreased with increasing toxin concentration. Fifty percent of the larvae died after 6.2 days at 40 g/ml and 5.5 days at 320 g/ml. Sublethal effects were studied by treated the third instar larvae with LC50. The toxin significantly increased larval development period from treatment until pupation. The pupation period increased significantly in female pupae. However, no significant differences were found in preoviposition and oviposition periods. Spermatophore number, fecundity, egg viability and adult longevity were not affected.
