Abstract

A method commonly used to monitor the activity of the egg parasitoid; Trichogramma spp. in the field involves the exposure of host eggs of Sitotroga cerealella and recollecting them several days later. Experience showed that these baiting eggs were mostly destroyed by predators which making the evaluation of results of ecological and behavioral studies impossible, In an attempt to solve this problem, a new device to expose host eggs for parasitism in the field without the interference of predators was developed and tested. The device consisted of a flat piece of Plexiglas (1.5x1.5x0.5 cm) covered with nylon screen from both sides to form space to insert host eggs glued on a small cards of paper. Field experiments showed that the numbers of undamaged units with the new baiting device were significantly higher compared to the conventional cardboard cards (5x10cm) with eggs glued on. To find out, if the new baiting device disturbs Trichogramma from egg lying, laboratory exposure experiments were carried out in cages (100x60x45 cm) with small potted apple trees. The results showed that parasitism in the new baiting device was 18.7 % lower than the conventional cards but the difference was not statistically significant. The baiting device provided the host eggs with ample protection from predators in the field and at the same time did not significantly affect the number of eggs laid by the parasitoid.
