Abstract

The effects of two biocontrol agents against Prays citri (Mill.), using inundative releases of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma evanescens (West.), at dose of 90000 wasps/feddan/release and application of Agerin (Bacillus thuringiensis) at 75 gm/100 LW were compared with application of the Ethion insecticide at 150 cc/100 LW in lime orchards at Middle of the Delta (Gharbia Governorate ) during two successive seasons of 2002 and 2003. The results showed that the percent reduction in the larval infestation of P. citri (compared to the untreated orchard ) were 62.2, 76.4 and 78.3% in 2002 and 65.9 , 80.4 and 75.9% in 2003 after application of T.evanescens, Agerin and Ethion, respectively. The statistical analysis showed no significant difference among the effectiveness of the three tested control methods in reducing infestation with the pest. Importantly, the obtained results revealed that the organophosphorus insecticide (Ethion) had the highly significant side effect on the natural enemies compared with the other two methods of control . Reduction values in pest larvae were 62.2 % in 2002 and 65.9 % in 2003, associated with application of T. evanescens, may be due to the short incubation period of P. citri eggs on the flowers. It is suggested that biological control methods with Agerin ( B.t.) / or with the egg parasitoid T. evanescens are the suitable and safe method more than applying chemical application for controlling the citrus flower moth (P. citri) in the lime orchards.
