Applications Of Soil Solarization Under Greenhouse ýCultivation In Libyaýý ýý

Abstract
Experiments on soil solarization under green house conditions were carried ýat different locations in the western region of Libya in four growing seasons ýý(1999/2000–2002//2003). The results indicated that this new technique was ýeffective control measure against agriculture pests under green house cultivations ýand constitute an effective replacement of methyl bromide. Application of different ýpolyethylene plastic sheets; one and two layers of transparent plastic, and one layer ýof black plastic were highly effective for controlling plant parasitic nematodes, ýparticularly root knot nematode Meloidogyne spp. and annual and ýperennial weeds including Bermuda grass Cynodon dactylon, in addition to ýits effect on fungal population in the soil. By applying soil solarization, there was a ýsignificant increase in growth, flowering and yield of cucumber, tomato, eggplant, ýcantaloupe and pepper as compared to methyl bromide treatment. ý
