Abstract
Pre-harvest spray with calcium sulfate (Ca So4), calcium ýchloride
(Ca Cl2), calcium nitrate (Ca(No3)2 and ýcalcium silicate
(Ca Sio3) at 3, 5 and 10 g/L (except Ca ýSiO3 was at 2 and
4 g/L) was applied on Strawberry cvs. Camarosa, ýRosalinda, Shandler and
Sequoia. The reduction in infection (%) by B. ýcinerea as well as the
restriction of visual ratings of mold development ýý(VRMD) due to calcium
application occurred more clearly on cvs Camarosa and ýShandler with greatest
effect to Ca Cl2, at the tested rates. Treatment ýwith Ca
Cl2, and Ca SiO3 to maintain quality fruit ýripeness
characteristics i.e., SSC (%), firmness (g/inch 2), ývitamin C (VC),
titratable acidity (TA) and colour density (CD), of both cultivars ýwere
achieved. Around two fold increase in flesh Ca content was obtained ýfollowing a
pre-harvest spray application of Ca Cl2, at 5 g/L. ýHowever, similar
increase in Ca content of Strawberries cell wall was obtained ýfrom pre-harvest
application of Ca SiO3 at 1, 2 and 4 g/L. Calcium ýchloride at 5 g/L
prevented disintegration of fruit cell walls as indicated by ýpreserving fruit
cell structure of Strawberries (cv. Cameras).ý
