Abstract

The correlation between ammonia nitrogen and the chemical and microbiological pollution of the coastal waters during dry periods (seasons) in 8 sites extending from Beirut to Selaata, was studied at a frequency of 3 to 4 samplings monthly.
The measured parameters are: pH, temperature, salinity, total ammonia nitrogen, feacal coliforms and streptococci.
The comparison of the means show that: for CF and SF: Antelias > Zouk > Jounieh ~ Okaibe ~ Jbeil ~ Batroun ~ Selaata mer ~ Selaata port .
for total ammonia nitrogen: Antelias ~ Zouk > Selaata port > Okaibe ~ Jbeil ~ Selaata mer for the pH and salinity: Jounieh ~ Jbeil ~ Batroun ~ Selaata mer > Antelias ~ Okaibe > Selaata port .
The highly positive correlation existing between ammonia nitrogen and, CF and SF at all sites together, is due to the high values of these parameters in Zouk and Antelias which receive domestic and industrial waste waters. If the results of these two polluted sites are excluded, the correlation won't be significant.
The significant correlation at Selaata, between ammonia nitrogen and, pH and salinity on one hand and the non significant correlation with CF and SF on the other hand, are probably due to the waste discharges by the chemical industries of used waters rich in acid and ammonia nitrogen but poor or free of feacal bacteria.
The microbiological ranking by the rank method shows that Zouk and Selaata do not comply with the OMS-UNEP (1995) criteria concerning bathing waters. For the ammonia nitrogen the site of Antelias exceeds the criteria of chronic toxicity, the sites of Selaata port, Antelias and Zouk exceed the normal concentration in coastal water.
