Based on the IUCN criteria, 4 seagrass species , 5 algea species 13 invertabrates, 4 fishes , 8 mammals and 1 reptile species, a total 35 marine species , are under the threat in the Aegean Sea . The main threats are habitat destruction, overfishing, domestic, industrial and oil pollution.
Sustainable fisheries, coastal and, tourism planning, monitoring and protection of endangered species, establishing marine protected areas, controlling the invasion of exotic species and contingency plans for oil spills are main actions for the survival of the Aegean Sea and islands.
