Abstract

Aquaculture production in Turkey is characterized by the dominance of two marine species, European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata), and one freshwater species, Rainbow trout (Onchorhyncus mykiss), which represent 22.62%, 19.56% and 56.35% of total production (79.031 mt).
The production cycles for all of this species are totally controlled at all life stages. Fry are produced by governmental and private hatcheries. In addition to concentration on sea bass and sea bream, researches have focused on the reproduction and growout processed of new alternative species such as red progy (Pagrus pagrus), common dentex (Dentex dentex), turbot (Psetta maxima) etc. Also, new techniques and new tools have been developed to reduce production cost and increase hatchery productivity. In this paper, the main aspects concerning the Turkish aquaculture sector and new trends are summarized.
