Abstract
Feeding habits of Diplodus sargus ,one of the most important marine fish in Syria , were investagated , with different indices calculated from digestive contents of (437) commercial samples, caught from fishing zones along the coast of Syria, during one year (1999-2000) .
Study of many indices specially Hureau(1970) and Geistdoerfer(1975) methods showed that ,the preferred prey was Crustacea, followed by Mollusca . The Crustacea ( Decapoda) and Mollusca (Gastropoda) were by far the most important prey. while the secondary prey was the fish, Polychaeta, Echinodermata and Algae. The accessory prey was Nematoda ,Bryozoa and Siponculida . The diet differ with seasons, but Crustacea and Mollusca remain the more importance as in the case for the majority of sea breams, D.sargus is characterised by adiverse diet in terms of prey reflecting available prey items in their environment.
