Fisheries Of Hatay

Abstract
There are 3,100 fisheries licences and 629 vessels in Hatay according to 2002data given by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The number was 2,118 licences and 475 vessels according to DIE (State Statistical Institue) 1999 statistics. Fisheries has been developed in Hatay especially coastal town Iskenderun, Samandag and Dortyol. There are 377 vessels in Iskenderun, 117 vessels in Samandag and 126 vessels in Dortyol.
European barracuda(Sphyraena sphyraena) Atlantic bonito (Sarda mediterranus), Pilchard (Clupea pilchardus), Sea bream (Sparus auratus), Pickerel (Maena sp.), Horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) and Red mullet (Mullus barbatus) are the most common fish species coming from fisheries. Crustacean and mollusk species of the region subject to fisheries are Long Finned squid (Sephia sp.), Shrimp (Penaus sp), Cuttle fish (Loligo sp.). Hatay has many freshwater resources and Common Carp (Cyprinus sp.), Siraz (Capoeta capoeta), Sand smelt (Chalcalburnus sellal), Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and Chub (Leuciscus lepidus) are the natural freshwater species in the market. Hatay is the number one place in production of Chub, Siraz, Sand smelt in the Mediterranean region.
