Abstract:

Reproductive biology of the red mullet, Mullus barbatus, has been studied at the coasts of Marmara, Aegean and Mediterranean Seas of Turkey. A total of 3682 red mullet were sampled by bottom-trawl at depths from 20 to 500 m seasonally between Summer 1991 and Winter 1993.
The male-female ratio in the sampled fish was within the range from 0.21 to 2.18 in all areas in each season. The spawning season of red mullet extends from early spring to mid-summer according to the Gonadosomatic Index values. The highest GSI values were 7.47 and 7.11 in the Sea of Marmara in spring and summer, respectively. The lowest GSI was observed in autumn and winter in all seas. The mean fecundity ranged from 7960 to 13000 eggs for the north Aegean Sea, north-western Levantine and north-eastern Levantine Seas in spring and 7023 for the north Aegean in summer. Batch fecundity increases through north to south probably due to increasing water temperatures.
