J. of International Medical Research. 1994; 22 (2): 121-129.

Polycythemia Vera (PV) is a clonal disease characterized by involvement of all hematopoietic precursor cell lines. It is one of the subtypes of the chronic myeloproliferative syndromes.
The production of erythroid myeloid and megakaryocytic elements within the bone marrow is increased. The dominant feature is the accumulation of erythrocytes leading to an elevated circulating red blood cell mass. PV has an unusually indolent course with a median survival of 8-15 years .
With optimal treatment, many patients many live for more than 20 years. The disease is more prevalent in later life, the median age of presentation being close to 60 years. Nevertheless, patients in their second through fourth decades are not rare.
There is slight preponderance in males. It is rare in the geriatric population and there is usually need to rule out secondary causes. We report one case of PV in an elderly woman. The literature is reviewed and the diagnosis, management and prognosis of the disease is discussed.
