An expert aduisory system for applying urban planning regulations and building permit requirements

Abstract
Aery few studies have addressed the use of artificial intelligence in simplifying urban planning process and building code regulations.
In this research an expert system was developed to help building meets the requirements of the urban planning regulations in Jordan. These regulations are difficult for designers to use because of the large number of interacting design factors that must be considered when deciding whether a particular building meets the requirements of regulations.
The VP-Expert shell was selected for develop in this research. It has the ability to generate rule bases with a feature denoted as induction. The feature allows the user to develop in a simple, tabular format the IF-THEN statement of a rule base. The induction feature converts the table into an expert system.
TRather than directly acquiring the knowledge from an expert, as in the more traditional approach to expert system development, the knowledge source for the expert system knowledge base was the written regulation. It was possible to arrange the knowledge base in a tabular format so that the VP- Expert Shell can use the induction feature to generate the rule base.
Case study was given to demonstrate the applicability of the developed expert system to actual cases of buildings in Irbid, gordan.
