A Pilot Machine for Municipal Solid Waste Separation
-As a supportive system for sanitary landfill and composting units-

Dr.Dr. Adel Awad
Department of Civil Engineering, Tishreen University, Lattakia, Syria.

abstract

The research has applied a pilot machine for separation which utilizes a rotary screen drum its length three times its diameter. This drum was divided into two parts, the first is made up of screen having an opening of 20mm(to separate the fine refuse, sieve opening gradually from 8 to20mm), and the second on the other hand, consists of a coarse screen having a 200mm diameter opening(to separate the medium refuse, sieve opening gradually from 20 to 200mm).
These parts were 1m and 3m in length respectively. The collected preliminary results for treating 30 tons/day of solidwaste by separation in the rotating screen drum was very promising in such a way that the percentage of recyclable materials were as follows: Metals 10.7%, Paper 17.7%, Plastics 4.0%, Glass 2.0%, and Textiles 1.27%. In addition, the percentage of organic compostable materials was 58% of the total solidwaste, or 77.5% of the medium waste which could be used as a cover for sanitary landfill, thus reducing the cost and volume of earth landfills.
In the case of a city that has an equivalent population of 400.000, result showed that a net profit emerging from the marketing of recycled raw materials is around $215.000. The amount is the outcome of the recycling of about 25% of the total solidwaste of the above mentioned population(100 tons per day). On the other hand, fine refuse with inorganic(mineral) matter which formed 5.0%, could be used as a cover for sanitary landfills. Consequently, one could recommend to generalize the pilot machine and its results by utilizing the rotating drum for the accumulated solidwaste of large Arab and developing cities.
