abstract
The present treatment system of solid wastes in Lattakia region(Al-Bassa composting plant) works through three phases:
Physical, biological,(natural aeration) and final(ready compost).
The paper aims at evaluating the actual situation of this system, including the determination of composition, density and relative humidity of the raw solid waste in compositing plant, in addition to temperature variation and air-oxygen saturation rate through biological treatment process of the solid waste.
Quality analysis have been made in two specified periods of the year(2000-2001).
The results came meeting the hygienic conditions after the extension of the aerobic process duration from the applied period of -7- days(max) to a research case of -18- days.
The paper determines as well the particle size of the final compost. The concluded results have been important as regards the rise of the inert matters rate in the fine compost of two sizes(10 to 20 mm , less than 10 mm), the thing which deteriorates the benefit from the final compost in agriculture, and confirms the necessity of the separation of the recyclable materials(plastic, metals,A textiles, glass) and the inert materials
(sand, clay, stone, bones, …) from the raw solid waste pre biological treatment.
