Urban Storm-Water Pollution and Treatment in Combianed Sewer System, Lattakia: Case Study.

Dr.Dr. Adel Awad
Department of Civil Engineering, Tishreen University, Lattakia, Syria.

Abstract

Studies done on storm flow-measured and analysed in Stuttgart and Munich, west Germany-are applied here as a possible model for Lattakia city for the prevention of pollution from organic, microbial and solid wastes associated with rain flow which is so far ignored by local Syrian planners of sewage treatment plants. Rainfall data in Lattakia for a period of 13 years are utilized in our models, taking into account the various factors affecting quantity and quality of rain flow in relation to rainfall characteristics and drainage conditions of the local urban area. They are used in the calculation of the urban storm run-off quality modeling, from formation till arrival at the water resource though simulation of functions for non-linear mathematical parial models. Sensitivity analysis methods have been applied to test the behaviour and efficiency of these models and how much the estimated values are close to reality. The paper also deals with transferability of Munich and Stuttgart measurements on Lattakia situation.
This allows the design of the necessary rainwater tank on combined sewer systems that is capable of treating pollution from the above mentioned source for the purpose of protecting the Syrian cost.

Keywords: coastal city of Lattakia, qualities and quantities of rain flow, simulation models, transferability, treatment.
