Abstract
Due to the increase of population density in Syrian cities, the effects of any natural catastrophe, in particular earthquakes, are becoming mor pronounce especially in probable devesteted areas.
Therefore, it is quite natural that the ultimate goal of any research and development program in engineering seismology and earthquake engineering is to obtain and develop national stratigies which can be applied both socially and economically for the reducation and mitigation of earthquake hazards in the country.
In addition to surveying existing types of buildings in order to strengthen weaker ones against earthquake, this paper emphesises the need to study the historical seismicity as well as 20th century instrumental seismic data of Syria in order to develop realiable seismic maps of the country. The paper also points out weak systems against earthquakes which are in existence.
Finally, the paper focuses on the need for establishing " national research institute of seismology and earthquake engineering ". This institute can oversee imlimentation of scientific fundamental steps for the assessment and mitigation of earthquake risk in Syria for an ultimate aim of protecting its society, economic infrastructure, and its natural environment from any possible earthquake hazards in the future
