Abstract
This study comes within the context of the scientific approach that aims at dedicating the scientific knowledge to serve the local society of this country and to contribute effectively in solving the existing problems.
The study was carried out under the assumption that wastes generated from hospital in Lattakia are all hazardous wastes because there is no separation of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes generated from the different division in these hospital.
The management of these wastes (the method of collection, storage, transport and treatment) being an important issue, Lattakia hospitals were chosen for this study.
These hospitals are: Governmental Teaching Hospitals and private hospital. The study determined the generation rates(Kilogram per day, per bed). These generation rates were compared to generation rates of hospitals in Europe and America. Furthermore the different techniques were analyzed. These techniques include waste handling, collection, storage, transportation, treatment and disposal, especially incineration and landfill systems.
This study showed that the present situation regarding the management of these wastes in the Lattakia hospitals do not use the same scientific method of waste disposal that reduce risk to human health and the environment as practiced in developed countries.
Finally the study came to a number of conclusions and recommendations. To be achieved, it is require that further research to investigate the hazardous hospital waste classification and separation to the term of percentage and effect on human health and environment in Syria.
