Comparative Study of the Effect of Abscisic acid and Gibberellic acid on Growth and Production of Potato (Solanum tuberosum) Irrigated with Saline water.

Sausan Suleiman, Anick Hormant and Michel Penot (1991): Biologia plantarum 33 (1): 49-57.

Abstract

This study was done to compare the effect of hormones: abscissic acid (ABA 10-4 M) and gibberellic acid (GA3 10-4 M) on potato development and productivity under saline water conditions. Three levels of saline water were used: EC = 0.382 m.mhos/cm (R0), 2.5 m.mhos/cm (R1), and 5 m. mhos/cm (R2). The results showed that GA3 increased vegetative growth in presence of salinity levels whereas ABA inhibited this growth in the same conditions. ABA increased salt absorption and GA3 did not. This affect shoot weight, which is the same in the 2 treatments in spite of the difference of plant size. The study showed as well the absence of a significant effect of salinity on tuber number and their weight in the replicates of the same hormone, the effect found is due to the hormone used. The number of tubers issued from plants treated with GA3 were superior of that issued from plants treated with ABA. But their weights were less and they were deformed, There was no difference in tuber weight in the 2 treatments. Dry matter and starch content were not affected by salinity in the replicates of the same hormone, treatment with ABA increased dry matter and starch content and GA3 has an opposite effect.
