Abstract

Evaluation of the genetic diversity in a Syrian barley core collection was investigated using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Twenty three previously collected from main barley growing regions of Syria were analyzed using six Operon primers. ten plants per accessions were analyzed and twenty three polymorphic bands were detected. The fragment produced by PCR- amplification allowed the distinction between the different accessions. Different level of genetic variability was detected between and within accessions. The Northern and the coastal areas of Syria showed the highest level of genetic variability.

The analysis of variability demonstrated the absence of duplicated accessions in the core collection and the no-necessity to eliminate any accession of the core. The genetic variability in the core collection was estimated to be 100%. Reasons of the genetic diversity detected in the different regions of Syria and their distribution are discussed in this paper.
