Abstract

This study was carried out in four districts of Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate; Biala, El-Hamoul, Quallin and Sidi-Salem. At each district, 100 honeybee colonies of first hybrid Carniolan honeybee were assigned for the study. At each district, ten pollen traps were fixed on the hives to collect pollen. The propolis was manually collected. Averages of each month were recorded from November, 2003 up to October, 2004. The obtained results revealed that colonies at Quallin district produced the largest annual average of propolis (8.88 g/colony) followed by that of Sidi-Salem (6.16 g/colony), Biala (5.06 g) and then El-Hamoul which produced the least average (4.50 g/colony). As for pollen also the colonies at Quallin district collected the highest average of pollen (484.06 g/colony) as an average for the whole year of study, followed by that of Sidi-Salem (433.74 g), Biala (423.94 g) and then El-Hamoul (322.99 g/colony). Concerning the activity of pollen gathering, it was found that the honeybee was most active during February in all districts, which may be attributed to abundance of faba bean areas, however, the least amount of pollen gathered during October and November when the pollen sources were scarce. In addition, Quallin district, which was the highest in collecting propolis and pollen, was characterized by high number of camphor (Eucalyptus spp.) trees which is a good source for propolis and pollen. Also, large area, of maize at Quallin helped the honeybee to collect pollen.
