Abstract

Lesser armyworm, Spodoptera exigua is an economic pest of faba bean in Sudan. Its control is characterized by injudicious chemical application. Farmer's field school has been the focus in this study in order to develop and disseminate integrated pest management package. Preliminary meetings were organized in selected target sites to raise interest for farmers' participation in technology development and dissemination. Technologies evaluated were chemical insecticide and cultural practice plus botanical insecticide. They were selected according to resources and opportunities available to farmers. Participants identified combination of cultural practice plus botanical insecticide as effective as synthetic insecticide in controlling S. exigua and improving yield. Economic evaluation showed that adoption of the package increased percentage net profit over farmers practice by 31.9%, 23.7% and 17.4% for Sevin 1kg/fed. Neem seed extract at 7kg neem seed powder/fed + irrigation 1day after spray and neem seed extract at 5kg neem seed powder/fed + irrigation 1day after spray respectively. Matrix and pool ranking by participant farmers showed that Sevin was placed first due to its fast killing effect. Neem seed extract + cultural practice ranked second due to its potency and availability. The performance of farmer's field school was satisfactory with strong farmers appreciation and participation.
