Abstract

The effect of terminal shoots infestation caused by spiny bollworm (SBW), Earias insulana (Boisd.) on the number of fruiting branches, number of flowers, number of bolls, boll weight after picking and cotton yield were studied during two successive growing seasons (2003 and 2004) at Mallawi Agricultural Research Station, Minia Governorate.

Results showed highly significant difference between the number of fruiting branches formed on the un infested plants and plants infested early, while the difference was not significant between un infested plants and plants infested lately (from 4th June). The effect of terminal shoots infestation on the number of bolls formed on the un infested plants and infested plants demonstrated highly significant difference. The differences between flowers formed on the un infested and infested plants demonstrated highly significant on 25th of May and not significant after this date. The difference between boll weight on the un infested and infested plants was from 25th of May until 4th of June) and not significant after that date. Terminal shoots infestation significantly affected cotton yield produced from plants infested during the period extended from 25th of May till 4th of June, while non significant difference was found between cotton yield produced from un infested and infested plants after that date
